Stillframe Privacy Policy
Last updated:
Introduction
Stillframe is a macOS app for recording and searching your own work activity. Privacy is one of the product’s core principles. This policy explains what the app can capture, how that information is used, and the choices available to you.
Screen and audio recordings can contain personal information about you and other people. Consider what is visible or audible before recording, exporting, or sharing a session.
What Stillframe Captures
Depending on the features you enable, your settings, and the macOS permissions you grant, Stillframe may process:
- Screenshots and screen recordings.
- Application and window names.
- Text recognized on screen using optical character recognition (OCR).
- Information about your work activity.
- Microphone audio and system sound when the corresponding features are enabled.
- Voice and video comments.
- Recording metadata, including dates, times, duration, projects, and session names.
How We Use Your Data
Stillframe does not collect personal data about you for the developer. Your recorded activity stays on your Mac and is not sent anywhere, except when you enable access through MCP.
The information captured by Stillframe supports the features you use:
- Creating recordings and timelapses.
- Searching your recorded activity.
- Creating reports and summaries.
- Organizing recordings by day, session, and project.
- Providing AI features and integrations when you activate them.
Data Storage and Processing
Your recordings are saved in the storage folder you choose on your Mac. Recordings, screenshots, audio, comments, OCR text, search indexes, and metadata are stored and processed locally. Stillframe does not upload this data to the developer’s servers.
MCP connections to Claude and Codex
Stillframe supports connections to Claude and Codex through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). When you connect one of these services, it can access personal information in your saved history through MCP. Information retrieved by a connected service may be sent to that service for processing.
Before connecting a service, review its terms, privacy policy, and data settings. Processing by Claude or Codex is governed by that service’s policies. See the Anthropic Privacy Center and OpenAI’s Privacy Policy.
Permissions
The following macOS permissions are relevant to the corresponding capture features:
- Screen Recording: Capturing screen content for screenshots and recordings.
- Microphone: Recording microphone audio and voice comments.
- Camera: Recording video comments.
- System Audio Capture: Recording sound played by your Mac.
You can manage permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Permission names and grouping can vary by macOS version. See Apple’s guide to screen and system audio permissions.
Stillframe does not request or use Accessibility permission.
Data Sharing
Stillframe does not automatically share your recordings or derived data with the developer or third parties. Access through MCP is enabled by you, as described above.
When you choose to export a recording or send it to someone, the recipient receives the information included in that export. Review the contents before sharing.
Analytics
Stillframe uses only Apple’s standard app analytics. Analytics information available to the developer is aggregated or provided in a form that does not personally identify you. Apple manages this information according to your analytics sharing settings and its App Analytics & Privacy policy. Stillframe does not use third-party analytics services.
AI training
The developer does not use your recordings, recognized text, audio, or other saved activity to train AI models. If you connect Claude or Codex through MCP, that service’s use of the information it receives depends on its own policies and your settings.
Support emails
If you email support, the developer receives your email address, message, and any attachments you send. Never send passwords, payment details, or private recordings.
Data Retention and Deletion
Retention determines how long data is kept. Basic’s limit on playback, history search, and MCP access to the last 3 days is an access limit. It is separate from deleting recordings. Plus unlocks access to your full saved history.
Automatic deletion
You can choose to delete recordings automatically after 30 days or 90 days, or turn off automatic deletion. Favorite recordings are excluded from automatic deletion. With automatic deletion turned off, recordings remain in your saved history until you delete them manually.
Manual deletion
You can delete recordings manually in Stillframe, regardless of your automatic deletion setting. Deleting a recording removes it from your saved history. If you want to keep a separate copy, export it before deleting it.
Security
Stillframe does not encrypt your saved data itself. Your recordings and other local data have the same protection as other files on your Mac. Their security depends on your macOS account, file permissions, and any device-level protection you enable.
Keep your Mac and storage folder secure, and grant MCP access only to services you trust.
Your Rights and Choices
Review what is on screen before recording. Manage macOS permissions, and remove sensitive information before sending screenshots or exports to anyone.
Your saved recordings are managed locally on your Mac. The developer cannot access or delete them remotely. For personal information you have sent to support, you can contact lysy@hey.com to request access, correction, or deletion, subject to applicable law.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as Stillframe or its data practices change. The current version will be published on this page, with the last updated date shown above.
You are responsible for checking this page periodically for updates.
